After two failed attempts to tackle to book, fascinated by the subject matter both times, I finally got through it, inspired to read it because of the Broadway musical based on the book that I found myself mesmerized by (go see it, despite how different it is).The book is a richly textured account of the life of the Wicked Witch of the West 5/5(5). Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (not to be confused with a creepy Australian kids' book series), a novel by Gregory Maguire, is the story of Elphaba, who will one day become that Wicked Witch of the West. The original novel was expanded into a four book series entitled The Wicked Years. Son of a Witch revolves around Elphaba's possible son Liir, A Lion Among Men.

This re-creation of the land of Oz, tells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Wicked just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature. /5(). Discover the untold story of the witches of Oz with WICKED the musical at the Apollo Victoria Theatre WICKED, the West End and Broadway musical sensation, is already the 9th longest running musical in London theatre of over major awards, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and ten theatregoer-voted WhatsOnStage Awards (winning ‘Best West End Show’ on three /5.

This Study Guide consists of approximately 39 pages of chapter summaries, quotes, character analysis, themes, and more - everything you need to sharpen your knowledge of Wicked. Many readers will remember the story of the Wicked Witch of the West. In this novel, Maguire explores possible.   In case you've been living in a hollowed out tree for the last couple of years and haven't heard about the play, WICKED is the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and how she became the Wicked Witch of the West. The book delves far deeper into the witch's life and times than any musical could in only two hours, however/5(K).

Following the traditions of Gabriel Garca Marquz, John Gardner and J.R.R. Tolkien, Wicked is a richly woven tale that takes us to the other, darker side of the rainbow as novelist Gregory Maguire chronicles the Wicked Witch of the West's odyssey through the complex world of Oz -- where people call you wicked if you tell the truth/5(K).

Gregory Maguire is the New York Times bestselling author of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister; Lost; Mirror Mirror; and the Wicked Years, a series that includes Wicked, Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz.

Now a beloved classic, Wicked is the basis for a blockbuster Tony Award–winning Broadway musical. Maguire has lectured on art, literature, and culture both at home /5(K). An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all/5.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Summary. Once upon a time in the far-off land of Oz, a green girl named Elphaba Thropp is born to a Unionist minister named Frex and his Desperate Housewives-esque wife Melena in your typical fairy tale fare here.

This is the book that started it all. The basis for the smash hit Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Gregory Maguire's breathtaking New York Times bestseller Wicked views the land of Oz, its inhabitants, its Wizard, and the Emerald City, through a darker and greener (not rosier) lens.
